This is a landmark year in our country’s long journey towards social justice for all its citizens: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation (1/1/1863), the centennial of Rosa Parks, the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement (2/4/1913), and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s immortal “I Have A Dream” speech delivered at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial (8/28/63).

Our country is now led by its first African American (mixed-race) President, completing his second term and another opportunity to advance the nation further towards realizing King’s Dream. Through music, song and spoken word, Our Eyes On the Prize: King’s Dream Fifty Years On tells the story of the aspirations and setbacks, the hopes, dreams and triumphs of the struggle for human rights in America up to the Age of Obama.

ur Eyes On the Prize: King’s Dream Fifty Years On is created by Dr. Brown for the Asian American Orchestra and "Voices of a Dream" Vocal Ensemble as a musical collage of spirituals, blues, protest songs, jazz and gospel to underscore and accompany excerpts of King’s “Dream” speech. The text of King’s speech provides the thematic inspiration for titles including “Exiles In Their Own Land,” “We Cannot Walk Alone,” “Righteousness Like a Mighty Stream,” “The Content of Their Character,” “A Beautiful Symphony of Brotherhood,” and “Bright Day of Justice.”

Our Eyes on the Prize: King's Dream 50 Years On, will premiere at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival on Sunday, September 1, 2013, and will subsequently be performed locally for our San Francisco home season and toured nationally to celebrate the Asian American Orchestra’s 15th Anniversary.

Thank You!
