Anthony Brown's GRAMMY nominated Asian American Orchestra will present the SANJU Project celebrating 30 years of Asian American Jazz. Smithsonian scholar, composer and percussionist Dr. Anthony Brown and bassist, composer and Emmy Award winner Mark Izu have been musical collaborators for over three decades as pioneers of the Asian American Jazz Movement. They will premiere their first joint composition, FIRE AND SHADOW: For Fukushima, featuring taiko drums and jazz orchestra. The SANJU Project also commemorates the first Asian American Jazz Festival (AAJF) held thirty years ago over Labor Day weekend in 1981. An exhibition of original silk screened posters and other memorabilia from the Festival's archives will be on display in Yoshi's Lobby, and a free symposium on the first AAJF including the co-founders and curators will be held in the Jazz Heritage Center next door from 2-330PM, followed by a reception. The SANJU Project will also honor 89-year old retired historian, musician, and educator George Yoshida, who played jazz in WWII Japanese American internment camp bands, has been a mentor and role model for Brown and Izu, and will be a guest performer with the Asian American Orchestra
Proceeds will be donated to Yoshi's Japan relief benefit. The SANJU Project is made possible with support from the Koret Foundation, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Yoshi's SF, Jazz Heritage Center and Fifth Stream Music. |
